First up we want to wish Lachlan the best wishes for a speedy recovery following his car accident last week in Buxton. It just goes to show how easily this sort of thing can happen and when you least expect it. From all of us here we want to wish you a full and speedy recovery and look forward to fishing with you in NZ this summer. Were glad that you are ok mate.
To the fishing.

The river has snuck up to one of those great levels that many of us wish it could stay at all year round. 1500 Meg sees the trout of the Goulburn becoming a lot less shy/wary and also adds a lot more in the way of fish holding habitat. It also adds a heap of gravel bars on which fish will immediately take up positions on. Suffice to say it’s a wonderful level for fly fishing.

The river is starting to warm enough to stimulate not only the trout to feed, but also the caddis and mayfly to hatch. The past few days have seen the first signs of caddis up near Thornton as well as a couple of species of mayfly. In comparison to recent years, this year is about a week to ten days behind in terms of hatches, but we should see the very best of the dry fly fishing kicking off in the next fortnight. My calendar for the past five years points to and October 1-5 kick off on the better hatches, so we are right on the cusp now.

Right now the best of the fishing is for those willing to methodically search with nymphs. Reports continue to trickle in (I say trickle because mon – fri = few fisherman about) of consistent fishing for those willing to persist using small imitative nymphs below an indicator. Pheasant tails and copper johns have been the best bet but keep them in the 14-18 size for best results.

With the way things are going it makes sense to be using small dry flies as indicators. We have caught enough fish on dry flies to say that this method is the way to go. Nothing is more heartbreaking than having a good fish come up and eat your foam indicator.

Hatches at this stage are a bit hit and miss. It’s hard to pick them one day to the next. One thing is for sure, if you get an overcast day your chances go up 75% and if there is a bit of wind you can add another 20% to the probability of something happen on the top. The only advice is to have a few small, hatch matching caddis and mayfly on you at all times. Drop by if you need some help with this as we have the specific ties to match local bugs.

There are no special local events of which to really speak of. We are getting some beetle falls at the moment but they are not large in size just yet. Also the recent thunderstorms produced no termite activity. We are probably 4-5 weeks away from their first appearances.

The smaller rivers are worth a fish if you don’t mind working hard for a shot at one or two fish. Those skilled in the bait fishing method known as ‘high stick’ or ‘Czech nymphing’ will do well if they know the stretches to target. But to be honest this is not enjoyable fishing and is physically demanding work for those new to it. The sarcasm reflected in the bait fishing remark is a bit tongue in cheek. It becomes a numbers game for many of these anglers and is very one dimensional to say the least. Anyway…time to get off my high horse and finish this report….

The small rivers will produce fish, particularly those on the valley floor around Thornton/Alexandra/Buxton. Those running into the lake are still running high and cold and are tough going. The water temps up there are extremely cold, particularly on the Mansfield side as they funnel snow melt downstream. I would stay out of the hills for at last a month; possibly two depending on how much warm weather we get in the not too distant future.

There have been no large hatches reported on the Rubi or Acheron. A few midge in the latter but no real mayfly or caddis as yet. It’s simply a time for bombing the depths with nymphs if you want to catch a fish in these waters.

Reports of poor fishing in the pondage emanating from other websites are a bit perplexing. Everyone I have spoken to of late has had success up there due to recent stockings. Having not seen it myself the answer may lie in the fact that the river is at 1500 which does mean that the levels of the Pondage will be fluctuating quite a bit. Knowing where the old river course is and the best times of day to fish it seems to be making all the difference. If you are going up to fish it stop by for a mud map……..

I have not heard any further reports from the lake this past week. Given the great water temperatures at the moment, there is little doubt that the trout fishing would be good. But I suppose who would bother when the Goulburn is in perfect nick.

I hope this helps those of you contemplating a trip up to make a decision – one way or the other. If you have a limited number of brownie points you should hold off and cash them in over the coming weeks as the hatches really get going. If you are not so shackled and are going fishing somewhere no matter what, then the Goulburn is far and away the leading prospect.

While I am thinking of it, we have had one of a party of three had to pull out of our New Zealand trip as he is being sent out to an island to study or monitor something. Yeah right! A likely story…. I should have expected this from our good friend Brian at the Bureau of Meteorology! He can’t even get the weather forecast right let alone book for a trip 9 months out. Oh well he did come last year and his two boys are still coming on the week he pulled out of so I should criticise him too much.

For those interested the group for this week comprises of a couple of young and very skilled fly fishers and another younger fella currently at University who is really easy going. The week is Week 6. Feb 14 – 21 and is peak cicada time for those thinking about it. It is going to be a week of excellent fishing and going on the personalities booked into this week, it’s going to be very low stress. If you are keen please let us know ASAP as we have just sent this information out to those on the waiting list earlier this morning.

So that’s it for now. Again we would like to say get well soon to Lachlan and wish him the best. Apparently he will be fishing again in a few weeks time which I’m sure is a major relief. For those contemplating a visit this weekend, we will be open right through to at least 5pm on both days.

Ciao for now

Shop Closed Today Friday Feb 1

Hi folks,

Sorry for any inconvenience that this causes. We have a funeral that we must attend today and so the shop will remain closed. A new fishing report will go up late tonight.

FYI the fishing has been great in the small rivers near Thornton and the Goulburn has had consistent nymph fishing this past week, likely to peak today and tomorrow due to the cooler than usual weather over the past few days. Hoppers and willow grubs in the Rubi have been the main flies. Small stimulators with beadhead nymphs have brought success on the G.
Swampy and NZ: The Remaining Dates

Hello to all,

We have four days still available for Swampy Plain Raft trips in the coming fortnight. They are Oct 30th, Nov 6th, Nov 8th and Nov 9th. Please phone if you are interested in a day's fly fishing this magnificent river. Drive up or fly options available.

New Zealand is all but booked out. With one of the three remaining spots being taken today, we now have two spots left in the final week only. That is two spots in Week 10. Mar 22 - 29, 2009. This would obviously suit a couple of friends wishing to have a week away, however lone fly fishers are just as welcome. It's a case of first in, best dressed.

Phone us on FreeCall 1800 458 111 to make a booking or discuss the options further.
Quick Fishing Report Update **River at 500 Meg**

                22.7% Lake
2300 Meg In
500 Meg Out
11.6 C
9.9 p.p.m
38% Pondage

Sorry that I didn’t get a chance to update the report last week, but I picked up a cold on Thursday night and was a little worse for wear between now and then. I wish I had have been able to write something because the fishing has improved drastically.

First off I will tell you a little about the rivers. The Rubicon is very cold and running hard, but there are a couple of hardy souls getting out there with tungsten headed nymphs and working the place over for some good fish. Nothing big, but 30-40cm river fish that are a little light in condition at the minute. I have had a look at it on numerous occasions and it is still a while away from fishing well, but those who persist should be able to catch a fish or two.

The Goulburn though is the place to be. The hatch on Monday night behind our place was enormous. Duns constantly drifting dun in good numbers and the expected reaction from the fish to such a quality hatch. David did very well with five six nice fish in short time.

The following night the weather was much better and the duns didn’t show up. Not all was lost though as the spinners returned to the water to mate and lay eggs and it was on again. Great fun on the dry fly in mid September.

The days have offered up consistent nymphing to those not straying too far down river. How far is too far yo may ask? Well in this case I am talking Gilmore’s Bridge. That would be the lower limit of the better hatches. Stick to the water below Deer Park but above Gilmores.

Some folk are consistently 5+ fish per session while others are blanking. You have to be thorough and go slowly, fishing at the right depth. Small beadheads are the go.

Things are primed to go off in the very near future. Drift sampling has revealed a large increase in the activity of both caddis and mayfly and we should start to see some consistent fishing in regards to both these insects in the coming weeks. We are on schedule for an early start to the better hatches as illustrated by Monday and Tuesday nights hatches and falls respectively.

On another note, our lakes have had some superb challenging fishing. For the first time since filling our main lodge lake with water about six or seven years ago, we have seen our first huge mayfly hatches. What’s more impressive is that it is not the usual mud burrowing mayfly that we know exists in the region, but rather a much smaller #18 species that we have never before seen or even heard of /read about.

Today the hatch went for a good five hours and the fish rose consistently right through. The weather was overcast with some drizzly showers and this no doubt helped the hatch and rise no end. A few larger March Browns came off as well, but the fish were locked into the tiny duns. One thing we found though was that the duns were being blown across the lake quite quickly (about 6”/second) and the fish would not look at inert presentation. These fish are no easy marks in the clear water.

That’s it for now. I hope that you are all well and hope to see you up here soon.
Cheers

Website Updates

Once again it is that time of the week and the fishing report on our site has been updated. We have also uploaded a new video report for those who enjoy viewing that GVFFC production.

On another note we have a single place remaining for our Beginner's Workshop starting tomorrow. A comprehensive two introduction to fly fishing for $300. Phone for more info.

Also in regards to New Zealand. We now have seven spots left, two of which I think will be gone by Sunday. If you are contemplating it and haven't yet touched base with us, now is the time to get a move on.

That's it for now. Enjoy the report and have a good weekend....
Beginner's Workshop and NZ 2008

Hi folks,

Just a quick note to let everyone know that we have had a last minute withdrawal from our workshop. This has also freed up the accommodation for the Saturday night. If you are interested please get back to us on Free Call 1800 458 111.

We also filled a further three NZ vacancies on the weekend, leaving a meagre eight spots remaining. There are two weeks left with a single spot and three weeks with two remaining for those that wish to bring a friend. If you are at all interested we would urge you to contact us ASAP as we know that at least two more will go this week.
Last but not least, we will be putting a short write up on the conditions in the next few hours via this Feed. It will not be a full fishing report update, but rather a summary of what happened and what is happening at the moment.

All the best and hope that you managed to get out and wet line on the weekend gone.....
New Beginner's Workshop in October

Our September Beginner's Workshop is now full and as a result we have added another one for October (Saturday 20 and Sunday 21). This is a comprehensive two day workshop designed to take beginner or intermediate fly fishers to the next level. Summary below or visit the website.

Beginner's Workshop  	OCTOBER  - Saturday 20 & Sunday 21

A comprehensive two day introduction to fly fishing that will give you express entry into the sport and cut years from the learning process. We take you through all you need to know, starting at the beginning with gear Fly selection and basic fly casting and finishing with choosing the right fly and presenting it to fish in the wild.

The workshop commences at 9.30am on Saturday September 8 at our fly fishing centre in Thornton. We provide all of the gear including flies, rods, waders, morning/afternoon tea, lunch and instruction. All you need to bring is appropriate clothing and a sense of humor!

All are welcome to join us on this weekend. While it is a Beginner's Workshop in name, many intermediate fly fishers will get a lot out of the it as we move onto the bigger issues of entomology, fly selection and streamcraft by lunch time on the first day.

Both days end on dusk back at the fly fishing centre.

Workshop Outline

    * Gear overview
    * Casting instruction
    * Line management
    * Entomology
    * Fly selection
    * Trout behavior
    * Streamcraft
    * Reading water - lakes and rivers
    * Stalking fish
    * Fishing blind
    * Casting to fish
    * Releasing fish

This is a great way to get a firm grounding in the sport. Our aim is to take you from total novice to fly fisher 'lance-corporal in the one weekend. You should be capable of independent progress on completion of the workshop; having a good grasp of casting, and how to locate and fool trout with a fly.

PRICE: $300 per person. Includes sandwich or BBQ lunch, tuition, course materials and use of any gear as needed. Workshop starts at 9.30am Saturday October 20 at our establishment and concludes on dusk the following night.

To book or for more information phone us on Free Call 1800 458 111

Latest News from GVFFC

                Hi there folks,

Another week has passed and the opening of the new trout season draws ever-closer. We have been busy on this end getting ready for the start of the real fishing, and if the weather remains as it has been this past week, we are in for a superb start to the season.

Daytime temperatures have been reaching the high teens, with windless blue sky days lining up, one after the other. Rising fish have been common in the river and water clarity has improved markedly over the past few weeks. We will be doing a new video report later this week to give you all idea of the state of the rivers. While we are hoping for rain, if we don't get some we are in for another brilliant opening weekend complete with rising fish.

This past weekend we ran our New Zealand Revisited workshop. Two days of New Zealand based fly fishing sensory overload. David spent much of Friday setting up his casting course, ensuring that the saucer shaped targets were in progressively more difficult locations. Overhanging trees, cross-wind corners, distance and lack of back casting room were used to test the skills of all participants. Par on some of the 'holes' was 20 casts which should give some idea of the difficult nature. The 19th hole was a seven metre cast to 'boat'! Everyone made par on the 19th!;-)

Saturday night was topped off with some wonderful footage shot out in the boonies on the remote west coast of the south island. Helicopters and wild fish in stunning locations It doesn't get any better than that.

Next year's event is already being planned and we will keep you posted via the website. It is something that all fly fishers should make an effort to attend regardless of whether they have never been across the Tasman or have made the trip twenty times. It was a lot of fun and there was a lot to share and learn.

The William Joseph range arrives in our shop on Thursday and we will be taking orders for a large shipment to arrive in early October. Those interested in trying any of the Willy J range should swing by between now and October 1 to ensure that they don't miss out. Comfortable and durable waders, innovative vests and packs, as well as a heap of great gadgets and technical clothing are what Willy J is famous for. Drop by and take a look if you get the chance.

We are now fully stocked with flies for this season and phone and internet orders have been running hot. Be sure to avoid disappointment and be ready for the new season by securing your flies now. Visit www.theflyshop.com.au to start restocking your fly boxes.

I will leave it at that for now. We added two more spots for New Zealand this summer and so have ten places left from 46! ;-) Those wishing to book or find out more, should contact us ASAP.

Regards
Antony, David and Geoff.

Welcome to the GVFFC RSS Feed

New technology is a scary thing. That's what I thought as I first started playing with this RSS stuff a few days ago. I found it very hard to come to grips with the technical side of getting an RSS feed to work and no doubt many of you are feeling the same way about simply subscribing and reading it.

Well that is how I felt on Friday. Today is Sunday and I am confident that this is going to be the best way to ensure that you all get the latest information from us as it goes to 'print'. No more manually subscribing to the email list and manually sending out thousands of emails a week.

Now you can subscribe and unsubscribe as you please. You can view a headline and not read on it if you doesn't have relevance to you. You can also access the very latest info within minutes of it being updated. Things like updates on the river conditions or a cancellation in the cottage that could make or break your weekend. Now you can have it all at your finger tips.

I will leave it at that for now. Please feel free to contact me if you have any feedback or suggestions as to how this all works. I am still on training wheels on this end! One thing that i would suggest is to set up your broswer so that you can see the updates as they happen. In Internet Explorer go to Tools then click Toolbars and then Feeds. The shortcut for this is pressing CTRL + SHIFT + J . If you are using FIREFOX click on View then Sidebar then WIZZ. This should get you started and you can fool around from there.

More info to come in the next day or so.
