THE RUBICON RIVER

The Rubicon River is the picture perfect, classic trout stream. It is located three minutes drive from our establishment and offers a variety of opportunities to catch brown trout along its short 15 km length.

The Rubi as we affectionately call it, offers all of the classic trout stream structure along its short length. From cascading mountain tracts, to sections of pool, riffle, run and finally grassy farmland flats where the river slows up and deepens. It has everything.

The Rubicon is particularly good during summer when the grasshoppers are on the hop. While fish average about 1lb in this small river, 2lb fish are common and at hopper time, fish up to 4lb can be stalked and caught by careful fly fishers.

Evening rises of mayfly and caddis are exceptionally good at times. Most pools contain some larger fish that only ever show up when feeding on hoppers or at very last light to sip duns. It is delight to fish here as the day ends.

The upper section below Jungai offers exceptional opportunities for wading and fishing the pocket water with attractors and hoppers. This is a lot of fun as we head into the hot weather of summer.

The Rubicon River, like other rivers in the area has self sustaining populations of brown trout. Catch and release is imperative in maintaining the quality of the fishery.
