This is a fly that doesn't
really represent anything in particular. When I came
up with it I wanted something inherently beetle'ey
that was easy to tie and would float all day in the
high altitude creeks I fish. The trout in them are
not big and are certainly not too fussy and this is
one of my favourite flies when fishing them.
The combination of peacock
herl, yellow foam and orange hackle is a real killer
on small brown and rainbow trout. It is not uncommon
to catch half a dozen fish in a small pool the size
of a a commodore station wagon and forget about changing
flies. The only time you will need too is when the
thing becomes too tattered but even when that is is,
open to debate. The fish are hungry and just about
anything they can find will be eaten provided of course
the drift is free of drag.
Tying it is very simple.
Tie in the foam at the back. Then tie in some peacock
herl, two strands. Wind the thread forward to about
1/3 the hook shank length from the eye. Wind one herl
to the thread and tie off. Wind the second one filling
in any gaps left the first time and tie off and trim.
Tie in the hackle and wind on and there you have it.
